Miss America

Miss America

Superhero comics have been around for over seventy years, and while many characters are now owned by huge media empires, many others fell by the wayside and are now in the public domain.

This allows anyone to use those characters and their original stories in any way they wish. There is even an online encyclopedia of these characters, providing information to fans who want to learn about their history, as well as creators who may want to use them.

Whilst looking through the site I came across Miss America and decided to attempt to re-design her as a Diesel Punk heroine, and as it's the fourth of July weekend it seemed appropriate to post it today.

Designing the K-Zine Logo

Posted on June 27th 2011

When I was working on the cover for K Zine issue one, Graeme Hurry (the editor / publisher) asked me to re-design the magazine logo. The colours of the original logo were black, white and red so I had to keep that in mind.

My design went through a couple of revisions before Graeme was satisfied with the end result, and then a black and white version was created for any time the full colour logo could not be used.

The fonts that I used came from Font Squirrel, a source of free commercial use fonts.

K-Zine Cover

I created this piece for the first issue of K Zine, a new magazine for the Kindle which aims to provide quality original genre fiction for the mobile reader. The magazine is a Science Fiction, Horror, Fantasy and Crime anthology and will feature, in particular, stories which mix the various genres.

Edited by Graeme Hurry it is a successor to Kimota a small press print magazine, which ceased publishing in 2002, but has a "best of" collection available at the Amazon Kindle store.

The Image was created using royalty free photos from a couple of sites along with one that I took in Malta, all of which can be seen on the left of the main image. These were then combined and worked on in Photoshop using various tools and filters. I then designed a logo and added the issue number.
